Sport NZ - Rainbow awareness and inclusion learning

E-learning modules designed to educate and increase awareness of LGBTQIA+ communities

Rainbow awareness and inclusion

Sport NZ has created a series of E-learning modules designed to enhance our knowledge and awareness of LGBTQIA+ communities. These learning outcomes are divided into several modules that cover the following topics -

Understanding Language & Key Concepts

The Power of Words

Language shapes our reality and understanding. For coaches and athletes, using inclusive language is crucial in creating a welcoming environment for everyone, including those from rainbow communities. Terms like "LGBTQIA+" encompass a wide range of identities. Familiarising yourself with these terms and their meanings is the first step towards fostering an inclusive atmosphere.

Awareness of Rainbow Communities

Recognising Diversity

Rainbow communities are incredibly diverse, encompassing a wide range of experiences and identities. Awareness involves recognising this diversity and understanding that each individual's experience is unique. This awareness can help coaches and athletes create more supportive and understanding environments.

Common Challenges

Members of rainbow communities often face unique challenges, including discrimination, lack of representation, and mental health issues. Being aware of these challenges can help in providing the necessary support and resources. For instance, creating safe spaces where athletes can express themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination is essential.

Creating Inclusive Spaces

Inclusion goes beyond awareness; it involves taking active steps to ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued. This can be achieved through:

  • Training and Education: Regular training sessions for coaches and athletes on diversity and inclusion can foster a more inclusive environment and assist in protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Support Systems: Establishing support systems, such as counselling services and peer support groups, can provide additional help for those who need it.

Celebrating Diversity

Celebrate the diversity within your team or organisation. Highlighting the achievements and contributions of rainbow community members can promote a sense of belonging and pride. This can be done through events, social media, and other platforms.
